The Man Behind the Cup
Jack Herer.
Author. Activist. The Hemperor. The man who dedicated his life to the truth about cannabis — and changed the world because of it.
Who Was Jack Herer
A Life in Service of the Plant.
Jack Herer was born on June 18, 1939 in Buffalo, New York. A U.S. Army veteran who served as a military policeman in Korea, he came to cannabis at age 30 — and once he did, he gave everything to it. He became the most important cannabis activist of the 20th century, not through politics alone, but through relentless research, writing, and an unshakeable belief that the truth would set people free.
Known worldwide as The Godfather of the modern cannabis movement and the "Hemperor," Jack co-founded H.E.M.P. (Help End Marijuana Prohibition), championed California's landmark Proposition 215, and authored the definitive text on cannabis prohibition. His 1985 book, The Emperor Wears No Clothes, has never gone out of print.

The Written Legacy
The Emperor Wears No Clothes.
First published in 1985 and never out of print, The Emperor Wears No Clothes is the foundational text of the modern cannabis movement. Jack spent years in libraries and archives assembling the evidence — that hemp was once America's most important crop, that cannabis prohibition was built on racism and corporate greed, and that the plant could still change the world. Often called the "hemp bible," it became the catalyst for legalization efforts across the country and around the world.
If all fossil fuels and their derivatives, as well as trees for paper and construction, were banned in order to save the planet, reverse the greenhouse effect and stop deforestation — then there is only one known annually renewable natural resource that is capable of providing the overall majority of the world's paper and textiles; meet all of the world's transportation, industrial and home energy needs, while simultaneously reducing pollution, rebuilding the soil, and cleaning the atmosphere all at the same time.
